We are hiring!
We are looking for a PhD student with an interest in machine learning.
Our mission
The Marine Data Science group focuses on building machine learning methods for geospatial and heterogeneous data, as common in marine ecology and technology. Our key areas of interest include:
Deep learning models for geospatial and heterogeneous data, e.g., for forecasting complex marine systems
Integration of domain knowledge and uncertainty quantification for such models
Deep learning models for time series
In our research group, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive academic research community that welcomes and supports individuals from all backgrounds. We believe that a diverse group of researchers fosters creativity, innovation, and excellence in our research. Therefore, we seek to attract talented researchers from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religion, and disability.
What you will be doing
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD researcher working in the exciting field of deep learning for environmental modeling. While foundation models are very successful in fields like natural language processing and computer vision, the research community is just starting to investigate them for environmental modeling tasks. Your goal will be to develop novel methods that allow to train foundation models on heterogeneous and multi-modal environmental data, e.g., for marine systems like the Baltic sea. These models will allow gaining a deeper understanding of dynamics of such complex ecosystems. You will work with deep learning researchers in our group, but also collaborate with leading experts in marine systems, e.g., at the Leibniz Institute of Baltic sea research (IOW) or the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada.
Requirements
strong analytical thinking skills
excellent knowledge in the development and application of machine learning methods as well as programming skills, preferably in Python
first experience in advancing deep learning methods is desirable
strong interest in the application and development of machine learning methods in fields such as environmental modeling
eagerness to experiment, curiosity, high willingness to learn, and self-motivation, as well as the ability to work in a team in interdisciplinary working groups
very good knowledge of the English language, both written and spoken, as well as excellent communication skills for presenting research results
Our offer
Supportive and highly motivated colleagues
Fully funded position, TV-L E13 (fixed-term appointment for 2 years, we plan to extend your contract afterwards)
Opportunity to work in beautiful Rostock just 20 minutes from the Baltic sea
30 paid vacation days
Educational programs offered by the University, e.g. presentation and writing skills or German language
Application
Please apply here.
You application should include:
A cover letter (1-2 pages), describing your research interests and why you want to work at the MDS group,
You CV, showing your education and previous employments
A transcript of records
